History and Culture Victoriei Square Timisoara a place to visit in 2025

Victory Square, former Opera Square, is one of the central squares of the municipality of Timișoara, the place where Timișoara was proclaimed on December 20, 1989, the first free city in Romania.

The perimeter of the square is guarded on one side by the National Opera building and on the other by the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the National Opera building, three theaters operate - the National, Hungarian and German. The building was begun in 1871, according to the plans of the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, and was completed in 1875. The inaugural performances took place on 22 September 1875 (in Hungarian) and 25 September 1875 (in German).

The buildings in the perimeter of the square are built in the Secession style with eclectic elements. The period in which they were built coincided with the emergence of the Art Nouveau style, which appeared in Europe at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The architects, trained in Vienna or Budapest, were up to date with the trends, creating architectural works in the Secession style, more precisely, the Viennese Secession trend with Hungarian influences. The style is characterized by monumentality, with ornaments inspired by flora, fauna, mythology or anthropomorphic characters. Victoriei Square has in its center the She-Wolf with her Pups monument, supported by a 5 m high pillar. The monument is a replica of the Capitoline Wolf, donated by the City Hall of Roma Timișoara in 1962.

Victory Square

Also known as Opera Square, Victoriei Square is the center of Timisoara. Here, on December 20, 1989, Timisoara was declared the first city free from communism in Romania, and if you look closely, you can still see the bullet marks that were fired during the events of that time.

Victoriei Square in Timișoara is an exclusively pedestrian area where you can walk and visit the Romanian National Opera and the Metropolitan Cathedral, two of the city's most representative tourist attractions.

Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Timișoara is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city and one of the most successful architectural monuments in Romania. Located in the city center, at the intersection of the most important traffic arteries, the cathedral dedicated to the Three Holy Hierarchs impresses with its significant dimensions, architectural specificity and glazed tile covering, which shines in the sunlight. The cathedral was built in the period 1936-1940 according to the plans of the architect Ioan Troianescu. The edifice with 11 spires (the largest is 83.7 meters high) has a length of 63 meters and a width of 32 meters. The cathedral can accommodate 5,000 parishioners.

In the basement of the cathedral is a collection of ancient religious art from Banat. The current museum holds over three thousand rare volumes of church books, over 800 icons and paintings, over 130 church objects, as well as church vestments and ornaments.

National Opera and Theatre

The Palace of Culture, also known as the Opera or the National Theatre, houses four cultural institutions: the Romanian National Opera, the "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre, the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre and the German State Theatre. The construction of the Palace of Culture building began in 1871, according to the plans of the Viennese architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner (builders of numerous theatre halls in Europe, in Budapest, Vienna, Odessa) and was completed in 1875. Two major fires devastated the building. The first took place in 1880 and the reconstruction lasted until 1882, preserving the original form of the building, built in the "Renaissance" style. After the second fire in 1920, only the side wings of the building remained intact. The reconstruction was done according to the plans of architect Duiliu Marcu, preserving the original style only on the side facades, the main facade and the performance hall adopting the neo-Byzantine style characteristic of Romanian architecture of the time.

Around the square are important institutions such as: the Romanian Opera, the National Theater, the Hungarian State Theater, the German State Theater, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, the Timiș, Capitol and Studio Cinemas, the Banat Museum, art galleries, as well as many shops.
